Foods to avoid when you’re sick

Many people don’t realise that when they have any kind of respiratory virus ( cold or flu ) there are certain foods that should be greatly limited and preferably avoided. The reason for this is that these particular foods are common culprits for causing extra mucus production. This is exactly what we don’t want during a cold or flu that is already causing the body to secrete more mucus than normal. In my clinic, the list that I commonly use is:

  • dairy ( milk, cheese, cream, ice-cream, yoghurt, chocolate – unless dairy-free )
  • bananas
  • oranges and orange juice
  • peanuts and peanut butter
  • vegemite & yeast spreads
  • sugar and sugar-containing foods ( eg. biscuits, cakes, lollies, fizzy drinks, sauces etc )
  • refined grains ( eg. white flour, white bread etc )
  • processed foods & junk food – including most take-away
  • fried & greasy foods

Once you are feeling well again, you can begin to slowly resume your normal diet.
